The Single Greatest Shot Of All Time
I AM CUBA is not a film for everyone. However, contained within the 2+hour propaganda piece is perhaps the single greatest shot of all time. It's a 3 1/2 minute single take that begins on a rooftop, slides down a building (maintaining perfect framing and focus) and ends up in a swimming pool.
Roger Ebert comments, "Reflect that it was made in 1964, long before the days of lightweight cameras and Steadicams, and the shot is almost impossible to explain." The shot has inspired directors like Martin Scorsese, Brian DePalma and Paul Thomas Anderson, who have all copied aspects of the shot. None have fully duplicated its genius.
